Microthyrium microscopicum Desm., Annls Sci. Nat. 15: 138 (1841)

Description: Hyphae superficial, sub-hyaline, 12 m wide. Ascoma thyriothecioid, amphigenous but mainly epiphyllous, orbicular, 150180 m diam.; scutellum composed of radiating rows of pale brown quadrilateral cells 34 45 m; those surrounding the ostiole forming a distinct collar, thick walled, dark brown, those at the margin elongated to form blunt projections up to 3 m long; ostiole 58 m diam. Asci numerous, narrowly obclavate, 3644 659 m, 8-spored. Ascospores hyaline, 1-septate, sometimes guttulate, fusiform, often slightly curved, 914 235 m, with two apical appendages about the same length as the spore
